By now you must be asking yourself — where the Hell did all this come from?
Well, Reader. Or should I call you Rider?
You're about to find out.
In Mouth of the Muse, Book 3 of The Dark Photography Folio, the past isn't just backstory. It's a loaded shotgun that's about to go off — and Saxon? Juliette? Persephone? No one's safe. Because all of them are standing in the blast radius.
Saxon Payne has a history. You knew that. What you didn't know was how deep it goes, how dark it gets, or what it cost the people who shared it. Now that past has come calling — driven by a stolen piece of priceless nanotech and two ghosts from a road trip that took a sharp left at the Gates of Darkness.
Meanwhile Juliette, Maxine and Cassie are on a road trip of their own, hunting the truth about Juliette's mysterious past. And who her father really is.
They find it.
All of it.
Every. Last. Piece.
From the scorched, breathtaking beauty of the American Southwest to the Carnival at the End of Time that is Burning Man, and finally to a climax that... well... you're just going to have to trust me, aren't you.
And nothing — not one single thing — will ever be the same again.
Ready? Then take a deep breath.
The cliff beckons.
Mouth of the Muse, the third installment in Swinn Daniels’ The Dark Photograph Folio series, seamlessly blends elements of science fiction and romance into a compelling narrative. This novel takes readers on a dynamic journey, marked by an intricate plot and a diverse cast of characters, each embroiled in their unique quests and mysteries. The story spans a range of intriguing settings, from the vibrant atmosphere of Burning Man to suspenseful encounters in the desert, offering a narrative rich in action and intrigue.
The book stands out for its imaginative plot and well-crafted characters, whose depth and creativity capture the reader’s attention. Daniels’ skillful unfolding of the story’s complex layers maintains a gripping hold on the reader, balancing the unfolding of mysteries with a gradual reveal of deeper narrative elements. The author’s adept fusion of science fiction and romance results in a refreshing and distinctive reading experience. The suspense is skillfully sustained, with the slow revelation of answers adding to the book’s engaging quality. The writing style is compelling, though I feel the initial use of flashbacks and flashforwards may require some acclimatization. As the story progresses and the characters become more familiar, the narrative structure becomes clearer and more accessible.
This novel is a testament to Daniels’ ability to invigorate the romance genre with innovative storytelling. It is a commendable and original work that leaves a lasting impression. For readers seeking a novel that deftly combines romance with science fiction, and who appreciate a story that evolves beyond conventional boundaries, Mouth of the Muse is a highly recommended read.
Author Swinn Daniels does not open his books cautiously, rather he rips the ground out from under you from the very first page. Book three, Mouth of the Muse is no exception as Juliette’s real father comes to light immediately and a girl’s trip is heedlessly planned to uncover the truth.
Coated in layer after layer of foreshadowing and foretelling of danger and disaster, the readers’ skin prickles as uneasy vibes settle around us. Each page leaves you feeling on the precipice, as it seems the swirling story within is nearing the edge of blowing wide open, never to be shut again.
Daniels gives readers tantalizing flashbacks, leading us through the then and now. Glimpses providing just enough of the character’s story to leave us hungering for the clashing of these worlds that is sure to ignite. Fat Paulie and Floria, Ling Pei and the Nameless One, Saxon and Persephone, Cassie, Juliette and Maxine, all road tripping as they circle the answers they each seek, the objects that elude them, and the power just out of reach. Experiencing as much as possible, wide-eyed and grinning before it all comes crashing down.
Mouth of the Muse uses the experiences of Burning Man, taking it all in, and not looking away, as it relates this back to the experience of photography. Always in the underlying fabric of Daniels’ writing is the itch for the camera as the surroundings and even the history of the characters builds. Gathering more of the backbone to their various exteriors, each character is brought further into the light in this third in the series.
At the conclusion of each book in The Dark Photography Folio series, I find myself excited for the next in Daniels’ repertoire. With this most recent leaving me looking forward to Persephone and Floria’s blooming relationship as Floria is taken under her wing.
I picked up the first book in this series, Eyes of the Beholder, thinking I would get an easy, enjoyable romance novel. I certainly enjoyed it, but there was more than a simple love story unfolding. Book 2 took things to a whole other level, and Book 3 went beyond my wildest expectations. I don't think I would classify this book as 'Romance', but rather some combination of Adventure, Sci-Fi, Mystery, and Thriller- though of course there are romantic storylines too. Not to mention a very engaging Burning Man Festival experience... We find out where Persephone, Maxine, Grace and of course Juliette came from, and uncover the creepy and compelling story of Saxon's 'Airstream Series'. One of my favourite developments was the relationship between Fat Paulie and his daughter Floria (and what an awesome character she turns out to be!). I'm not sure where Daniels gets all of his outrageous ideas but they totally work, and there were multiple times I laughed out loud. You will not be bored reading this book!
Daniels does it again! Mouth of the Muse, the third installment in The Dark Photography Folio, is an electrifying journey from start to finish!
Few authors can craft characters and storylines as masterfully as Daniels. In this book, we finally uncover the truth about the enigmatic Carlos, the fate of the Enlighted Path and the secrets behind Juliette's upbringing, Maxine's backstory is equally captivating, adding even more depth to this intricate world. And of course, the eerie Airstream Series - what an unforgettable, chilling storyline!
As the plot unfolds, the richly drawn characters become impossible not to love (or fear) , keeping you on the edge of your seat. While many mysteries are unraveled, Daniels expertly sets the stage for what's to come, especially with Persephone and the jaw-dropping cliffhanger!
I've never read anything quite like this before. If you haven't started the series yet, do yourself a favour, this is one wild ride you don't want to miss!
